#_INDIA GATE

India gate situated on the eastern side of Rajpath salutes the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I. The India Gate permits the tourists to retrace the bravado of the Indian soldiers. The monument is now a major tourist spot in Delhi and a common picnic site for tourists and residents. The India gate was structured and designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1921.The foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness - The Duke of Connaught. The India Gate was built to commemorate the British and Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and hundreds of soldiers who lost their lives in the Northwest Frontier, the Afghan war of 1919 and the Indo-Pak war in 1971. The India Gate reaches up to a height of 42mtrs and stands tall in the heart of the city with an arched structure. It is boasted that the India Gate is similar in structural elegance to the counterpart in Paris. The monument is built with light brown Bharatpur stones. An added memorial- Amar Jawan Jyoti was introduced in 1971 after the Indo-Pak war in the memory of the many deceased Indian soldiers. A flame burns day and night in remembrance of the lost lives.



#_RED FORT

Red fort is one of the historic monuments located in Delhi. This monument gets its name from the red colored sandstone used for construction by the Mughals. This fort is located in the center of the city and was used as a ceremonial spot for the royals. Even today, the spot is used for political and national ceremonies.Red fort is not just about the outer beauty of the fortified wall. You can find many interesting attractions inside the fort like palaces, halls, museums and others. Constructed in the 17th century, this monument is an attraction by itself. The fort covers 254 acres of land covering 2.4 km. The fort is octagonal in shape and many regions of the fort are decorated with marble works.Other interesting elements are step well, imperial bath, Moti Masjid, Hira Mahal and others. On the northern part of the fort, you can find a small garden, which was fed by a reservoir in the past. There were similar gardens on the western side of the fort, which were destroyed by British in the past.Every evening, a sound and light show is conducted inside the fort, which is watched by thousands of people. This show explains the history of Mughals, their lifestyle and other elements.


#_JAMMA MASJID

Towering over Old Delhi, the magnificent Jama Masjid stands as the reminder of the Mughal architecture which was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Basically the name Jama Masjid is derived from the word Jummah which is referred as a congregational prayer observed by the Muslims on Friday. Considered as the largest mosque in India, Jama Masjid is built from red sandstone and white marble and stands tall dominating the skyline of the busy Chawri Bazar in Central Delhi.Visiting the mosque, visitors come across the view of the courtyard standing on more than 30 steps higher than the street, giving the mosque a commanding view of the surrounding area that fills the atmosphere with sanctity. Not just this, but the visitors are sure to get impressed at the first glimpse of the mosque as it is the austere grandeur that makes it a must visit place in Delhi.Facing towards the west, Jama Masjid is oriented towards the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The eastern gate of the mosque is the largest which is served as the Royal entrance which remains closed on the weekdays. Capped with three marble domes, the roof of the mosque visitors could see the beautiful calligraphic inscription in Persian.Being of the holy places in Delhi, Jama Masjid is deeply revered by the city people and tourists coming from across the globe. It is here that thousands of people gather to offer their prayers and to conclude their fast during Ramadan days. Having a wide space, the courtyard of the Jama Masjid can accommodate 25,000 people at a time.


#_QUTIB MINAR

Built in the 13th century Qutub Minar is not only the highest brick minaret in the world but also one of the famous historical landmarks of India. Being the cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site, Qutub Minar attracts thousands of visitors everyday. Visiting the tourist spot, one would come across the surrounding archaeological area that comprises funerary buildings, notably the magnificent Alai-Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art which was built in the year 1311, and two mosques.Witnessing the monument, you will be surely enthralled by the huge structure that withstood all tests of time. Rising up to 72.5, Qutub Minar have 379 steps which is required to be covered to reach to the top. Built out of redstone and marble, the three stories from the base are built using red sandstone while the top two stories are made of marble and sandstone.The magnificent architectural structure was built to propound the prominence of the Islam religion. Also, it was not completely built in one go rather it underwent various repairing works for the restoration of this structure by maintaining the Indo-Islamic Style inspired from the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan. #_HUMAYUN'S TOMB

Being one of the most impressive structures in Delhi, the Humayun’s Tomb which is located conveniently at the banks of Yamuna River is a brilliant architectural splendor of the Mughal period. The Mausoleum is basically a tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun which was built in the 1560s by Humayun’s eldest wife Bega Begum after his death. Today the tomb is a major attraction among the tourists visiting Delhi. Although the building of the Tomb has a complex structure but it is the charm and grandeur of this imposing structure that attracts thousands of travellers every year across the globe.Visiting Humayun's Tomb one could see the beauty that depicts the true Mughal style of architecture, which was inspired from the Persian style of architecture. The tomb was even inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1993 because of the brilliant architectural beauty. Also, the tomb is surrounded by beautiful lush Mughal garden which is divided into four parts by the pathways. Above all it is the various water channels for the fountains that makes the Humayun’s Tomb a true architectural delight which is a treat to the eyes.The Humayun’s Tomb was built after the death of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1555 AD. He was laid to rest at his palace at Purana Quila in Delhi. Following his death, to preserve the sanctity of their Emperor’s remains, the grieving queen Bega Begum set out for Mecca to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage and vowed to build a splendid mausoleum in the memory of her husband Humayun. Several Persian architect were appointed out of which one was Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, hailing from the Herat region of Afghanistan. Bega Begum did not only commission and paid for the construction of the tomb but supervised its construction as well. 


#_LOTUS TEMPLE 

Notable for a flowerlike shape and being one of the prominent tourist attractions in New Delhi, the Lotus Temple is located amidst the lush green landscape. Visiting the temple one could sense the pleasant and tranquil ambience which is perfect for the ones looking for meditation, peace and wisdom. The beautiful structure is visited by the locals and international tourists all throughout the year. The vicinity of the temple comprises gardens decorated with towering trees, short bushes and colorful flowers.Designed by Iranian-American architect Fariborz Sahba, the Lotus Temple was completed in November 1980 and was opened for the public in December 1986. Also, the architect won acclaim for the project before the completion of the temple project. The Lotus Temple being one of the seven Baha’i Houses of Worship has won numerous architectural awards and has also been subsequently featured in many newspapers and magazines. Later in the year 2001, a report declared Lotus Temple as one of the most visited buildings in the world. The construction of the splendid Lotus Temple took nearly 10 years before it finally got the shape of a lotus. Entering the temple complex tourists can witness that the building is composed of white marbles, cement, dolomite and sand with around nine crystal clear pools dotted over it. Also, tourists can witness the 27 freestanding petals that are made of marble. Also, there are nine reflecting pools that encompass the temple from outside that appears to be even more beautiful during the dusk. The temple has the capacity to accommodate nearly 2500 people and has nine doors that open in a central hall.


#_RAJ GHAT

Raj Ghat is a memorial that is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The ghat is located in the banks of River Yamuna. It is a black marble platform that is built at the spot of cremation of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Raj Ghat holds the cremation spot of many notable people other than Gandhi. Jawaharlal Nehru’s memorial is located at the northern part of Raj Ghat. It is called as the forest of peace. Adjacent to it, the cremation spot of K R Narayan is located.Other notable people’s memorials found her are Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, GianiZail Singh, Chandra Shekar, I K Gujral and others.


#_LODHI GARDENS

Symbolizing the national, historical, and architectural values, Lodhi Garden is a favourite getaway of Delhiites. Originally named after the wife of the British Resident, Lady Willingdon, the garden was the capital’s loveliest escape. Today, it has developed into a lush, tree-shaded garden with captivating monuments and plantation. The beauty of Lodhi Garden lies significantly in its architectural styles. The park consists of a few notable historical structures – tombs, lake, Athpula - an eight pillared bridge, and much more. Also, you will come across a well-crafted glass garden to see the wonders of bonsai park and rose garden. These fascinating plants blossoms and lights up in the morning.The architecture of Mohammed Shah’s mausoleum features Islamic and Hindu styles. It consists of a huge central dome and eight chhatris. The eight small domed structures are beautified with a lotus finial and ornate pinnacles at the corners. It forms as an octagonal chamber and it is a sight to behold.Surprisingly, the mausoleum of Sikander Lodi draws revelation from Mohammed Shah’s tomb. Its architecture is defined by the Indo-Islamic style. The structure consists of the same octagonal design along with a central dome, minus the chhatris.  It boasts of Mughal architecture design on the walls and you can enter the tomb through a domed pathway.
